Ukraine is the largest country by area entirely located in Europe. It’s known for its churches, Black Sea resorts and forested mountains. It has the Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains, from the south it is washed by the Black and Azov Seas. It borders Romania, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. And Belarus and Russia in the north. It was the northern neighbour who decided to treacherously attack our country on February 24, 2022. A number of cities were shelled overnight, and although the world and American media were full of headlines about the imminent invasion long before that terrible night, the global population of Ukraine did not take them seriously. In the first days of the war, many cities were under the occupation of the northern brother. Russian soldiers committed atrocities in them with particular cruelty. One of these was the city of Bucha, which is not far from Kyiv, the capital of my country. Bucha massacre is a massacre of civilians, accompanied by cases of looting, kidnapping and torture, committed in March 2022, in the territories controlled by Russian troops. On February 28, Ukrainian armed groups and citizens did not let Russian occupiers into Bucha, and mopping-up battles were fought. But only on March 31, the city was liberated from the Russian army. Signs of Russian war crimes were revealed, in particular, the massacre of the civilian population. I live in the Kyiv region and have visited Bucha many times for work, and my relatives survived the occupation – they have an apartment in that city. Bucha is a city that heroically defended this unequal battle, alas not only at the cost of our army but also at the cost of ordinary citizens. Civilians, who, just yesterday, were making plans for the future, going to work and taking their children to school, and someone might have been planning a vacation. All of them had lived peacefully and worked for the benefit of their own and their country’s future. From the screens, this information sounds plain, just words, and each life looks like just another number in a cold statistic. But stop for a moment and think – in a peaceful city, in the centre of Europe, in 2022, these people were slaughtered like cattle on a farm, they were shot in the head with their hands tied behind their backs, with no chance to leave their city to escape and survive. What was he driven by, the Russian soldier? What was he thinking? Not just pulling the trigger and releasing a soulless bullet from the muzzle of his machine gun, no, this is completely different. This is an army elbow-deep in blood, unwashable and unerasable, like the memory of the Ukrainian people. My hobby has now resulted in this form. I dedicate this axe to the city of Bucha and its inhabitants. Making axes is my passion, I put my soul and all my skills into every product.
